Prescott Valley, AZ – The Arizona Sundogs drown in a 4-1 loss against the Denver Cutthroats, Friday night at the Denver Coliseum, dropping to tenth place in the league standings.

The Denver Cutthroats outshot the Sundogs in the first period controlling much of the play in the opening frame. 45 seconds into the period Arizona’s Paul Mcilveen was issued two minutes for slashing, sending Denver on the power play which Arizona successfully killed off. The Cutthroats struck first tonight when Aaron MacKenzie buried a slap shot into the back of the net giving them the lead heading into the second period.

Denver’s Troy Schwab was sent to the box, 12:48 into the second providing Arizona with the advantage that the Cutthroats robbed them of and subsequently collected a shorthanded goal 14:34 into the period. Looking to gain momentum the Sundogs closed their deficit in the second after Travis Ouellette scored on the power play with assist credit given to Mcilveen and Michael Trebish. Arizona continued to struggle keeping the puck out of their zone and found themselves down three points going into the final 20 minutes. Jean-Philipp Chabot posted an unassisted goal 1:17 in the third after he tipped the puck past Chris Rawlings’ blocker side. Less than three minutes later, Schwab poked in a bouncing rebound to tally Denver’s fourth goal, securing their win.

Despite the score, goaltender Chris Rawlings put up a good fight defending 33 shots on net. Arizona was outshot by Denver 33-31. The Sundogs were 1-6 on the power play and the Cutthroats were 0-4. The two teams meet for round two tomorrow evening at 6:00pm at the Denver Coliseum. Arizona’s long, 12-day and six game road trip wraps up against the Cutthroats before returning home.
